Well, I finally made it to “The Rock”. After a very successful day of birding yesterday, we arrived in North Sydney to catch the overnight ferry to Newfoundland. There were very few passengers, so it was a nice and quiet atmosphere. Unfortunately it was a really bumpy ride. The weather seemed fine outside, but there must have been some stiff winds once we left the protected waters around the harbour. Neither one of us got more than 30 minutes of sleep for the 8 hour trip. At one point I had to just walk around in circles to prevent myself from barfing. They had barf-bags handy in case we needed them, and I came pretty close to needing one!
Once we were back on solid ground we decided to skip the snowboarding and just head to St. John’s. We were too tired to risk throwing ourselves down an icy mountain! It was a long 8.5 hours of driving to get to the other end of the island. We didn’t see many birds, but we did see 1 CARIBOU, which was super cool. It was right beside the Trans-Canada highway so we got a quick and decent view.
Unfortunately we arrived in St. John’s after dark so I wasn’t able to look for the Pink-footed Goose, but I will be out birding as soon as the sun comes up tomorrow. I can’t wait to bird the city!
